Door Handles, Locks and Hardware in Scarborough

The handle is the part of a door you touch every day. The lock is the part that decides whether the door does its job. When Fortress Windows & Doors installs a new front or back door in Scarborough, the hardware is chosen at the measure visit along with the door itself, and adjusted by our own crew on install day.

Locks

A multipoint lock or a single deadbolt?

A standard deadbolt ties the door to the frame at one point. When a door is forced, that is where the frame gives way. A multipoint lock throws bolts at the top, middle and bottom of the door with one turn of the key, which spreads the force down the whole edge of the door.

There is a comfort side to it too. Those extra locking points pull the door tight against the weatherstrip along its full height, instead of only at the handle. It is the lock we put on the fibreglass front entry and the patio door of the Oro-Medonte house.

Handles

Choosing a handle

Start with who uses the door. Lever handles open with an elbow when your hands are full of groceries, and they are easier for anyone with a weak grip. That is why so many people pick them for the main entry.

After that it is mostly looks. The handle should suit the door: a wood-grain fibreglass door and a plain steel side door rarely want the same hardware. Bring it up at the measure visit and we will go through what fits your door before anything is ordered.

Good to know

The hardware that matters most

Laminated glass in sidelites

Plain glass beside a door means nobody needs to beat the lock. Laminated glass cracks on impact but holds together, so the sidelite is about as hard to get through as the door.

Patio door locks

Older sliding doors often fail at the latch, or the panel can be lifted off its track from outside. The patio doors we install use a multipoint lock that engages the frame at more than one point.

Thresholds

A lower sill is easier for strollers, walkers and anyone who does not lift their feet much. If that matters in your house, raise it at the measure visit.

Adjusted on install day

Hinges, the strike plate and the latch are adjusted until the door closes with light pressure and the key turns without forcing. We check it with you before we leave.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a multipoint lock?

A multipoint lock throws bolts into the door frame at several points, usually the top, middle and bottom, with one turn of the key. It spreads the force if someone tries to kick the door in and pulls the door tight against the weatherstrip.

Yes, for most homes. Lever handles open with an elbow or a full hand, which makes them easier for kids, older people and anyone carrying something. For security, the lock matters far more than the handle style.

The patio doors we install use a multipoint locking system that engages the frame at more than one point, so prying at the latch alone does not open the door. They can be paired with security glass as well.

Yes. We supply and install entry, patio and garden doors with their hardware across Scarborough, from our office at 4725 Sheppard Ave E, Unit 405. Call (416) 291-5795 to book a measure.
