How they work
Where awnings earn their place
Awnings are at their best in places a casement would get in the way. Above a kitchen counter, over a bathtub, high on a wall for privacy, or along a walkway where a side-swinging sash would catch someone’s shoulder.
They are also common stacked under or over a fixed picture window. The big pane gives the view, and the awning below it gives ventilation without breaking up the glass with a vertical frame.

How an awning window seals
Like a casement, an awning closes by pulling the sash into the frame, so it seals tightly against the weatherstrip. That makes it far less drafty than an old slider. The trade-off is that an awning does not open as wide as a casement, so it is a ventilation window, not an exit. For a bedroom that needs an emergency exit, a casement is usually the right choice.

What to know before you order
Glass, frame and screens
We install Canadian-made vinyl awning windows with Low-E 272 and argon glass. The screen sits inside, since the sash swings out. In a bathroom, ask about obscure glass for privacy. It pairs well with an awning mounted high on the wall.
Basements
A lot of older basements have small, leaky hopper or slider windows set into the foundation. An awning can replace them where the opening is too short for anything else. Where the basement needs a real exit, the opening often has to be made bigger, and that is a different job from a straight swap. We will tell you which one you are looking at when we measure.
Combinations and sizing
Awnings work best in widths that are wider than they are tall, since the sash hangs from the top hinge. You will often see a row of them along the top or bottom of a large fixed window, or two stacked awnings in a tall narrow opening.
Installation and warranty
Our crew removes the old window and frame, checks the opening, and sets the new unit level so the top hinge carries the sash evenly. Then it is insulated, sealed and trimmed. What is the difference between an awning and a casement window?
Both open outward with a crank. A casement is hinged on the side and swings like a door, while an awning is hinged at the top and opens from the bottom. Awnings can stay open in light rain; casements open wider and can serve as an emergency exit.
Can you leave an awning window open in the rain?
In light rain, yes. The open sash sheds water away from the opening like a small roof. In heavy, wind-driven rain it is best to close it.
