What we do

What Ajax homes usually need

The wartime houses south of Bayly

Ajax started as a munitions plant town in the 1940s, and the small storey-and-a-half houses near the lake are the original stock. Wood windows, sash weights, openings that were never square. These are full-frame replacements, and the basement windows usually get upgraded at the same time.

Central Ajax and the 1960s and 70s streets

Bungalows and side-splits with single-pane wood or aluminum behind a storm, and a big picture window at the front. Full-frame replacement with a structural check on the picture window header is the normal job here.

Applecroft, Nottingham and the 1990s and 2000s subdivisions

Builder-grade vinyl hitting the end of its sealed-unit life all at once: fogging, cranks that spin, sashes that will not lock. We see whole streets replacing in the same season.

Entry and patio doors

Insulated steel or fibreglass entry systems with the frame and threshold replaced, and vinyl sliding, garden or French patio doors for the backyard. South of the 401 the wind comes straight off Lake Ontario, so doors facing the water get multipoint locks and a proper sill pan.

Eavestrough and downspouts

Six-inch seamless aluminum, formed on site. Ajax sits on clay, and a downspout that dumps beside the foundation is where basement leaks start. We extend them to where the grading actually carries water away.

Why Fortress

Why Ajax homeowners call Fortress

We are close and we are real. Fortress has an office in Scarborough you can drive to, a second office in Barrie, and 37 years of installs. Ajax, Pickering and Whitby have been part of the route since the beginning, and the number on this page rings at the office, not a call centre. Before you call anyone, read our comparison of window replacement companies in Ajax.

Installing since 1989

Family-owned and still run by the family. Durham has been part of the route for 37 years.

What is included

How an Ajax job runs

It starts with a measure at your house, not a quote over the phone. We check every opening, the sills and the wall around them, and give you one written price for the whole job. That price includes:

Fortress crew installing, levelling and sealing new vinyl windows

Our process

How the job runs

From first call to final walk-through.

01

Book a measure

Call (416) 291-5795 or use the quote form. Tell us which openings and roughly when.

02

In-home measure

We measure every opening, check for rot or water damage, and go through frame colour, grilles and glass options with you.

03

One written price

One number for the whole job. It only changes if you change the scope.

04

Build and install

Custom-built to your measurements, which takes a few weeks and longer in spring. Most Ajax homes are installed in one to two days.

05

Walk-through and warranty

We walk every unit with you, show you the hardware, and register the warranty.

The difference

What changes after the install

Lower heating bills

Going from single-pane or failed builder vinyl to low-E argon-filled glass shows on the Enbridge bill the first winter.

No more cold pocket by the window

That cold spot by the living room window is the frame leaking, not the glass. Foamed frames fix it.

Quieter rooms

Sealed double or triple glazing takes the edge off the 401, Bayly, Harwood and the GO line.

Rebates when they are open

Ontario and federal energy rebate programs change. We check what is open when you book and tell you what your job qualifies for.

Drier basement

Eavestrough pitched properly with downspouts extended away from the wall is the cheapest basement waterproofing in Ajax.

Resale

Home inspectors in Durham look at the windows first. New, warrantied units go in the listing; fogged glass comes up in the negotiation.

Service areas

Other areas we cover

Same crews, same warranty, across the GTA and Simcoe County.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit to replace windows in Ajax?

Not for a like-for-like replacement in the same opening. You need a Town of Ajax building permit if the opening is being enlarged or a new one cut, which covers most basement egress windows.

A typical Ajax house with 10 to 15 windows is installed in one to two days once the windows arrive. Lead time from measure to install depends on the season; spring and early fall are the busiest.

Yes. One opening at a time, so the house is never open for long, and the foam and caulking we use are rated for cold-weather application. Winter is often the fastest time to get on the schedule.

Yes, and we do a lot of them in South Ajax. The openings are small and rarely square, so each one is measured individually and the replacement is built to fit. Full-frame is the right approach; the original wood is usually past saving.

Yes. Eavestrough and downspout replacement is a standalone job. Six-inch seamless aluminum, formed on site, with downspouts routed away from the foundation.

Yes. Both have their own pages on this site, and both are handled from the Scarborough office.
